Cristel Notes

Not only did Leo feel literally 'small' in this mountaineaous region:

"This mountain his higher than I have even seen (...) Its peak is always covered in snow. The first time I saw it I thought it was a cloud, as it was so high" (Leo, 114)

But he was also made to feel 'small' and vulnerable by the people there:

"I spent a night in this mountain region, in the house of a cleric well known in this region. I had to eat their food, a kind of porridge, with meat from an old ram, which was so hard that I knew the animal must have been older than 7 years. I had to sleep on the bare floor. I awoke early the next morning, and was about to leave when 50 villagers came to me and started telling me about the discords that reigned amongst them, and asking me to rule on them. I answered that I knew nothing about their problems, at which point three noble men told me:

"it is our custom here that visitors do not leave until they have ruled on each of our cases"

He had barely spoken these words, that someone took my horse away and I was obliged to stay there another 9 days. 9 painful days and 9 no less painful nights, due to the food and the poor sleeping conditions" (Leo, 111)
